There are wide differences between the regional groups of countries. The differences are even more marked between adjacent countries. The most significant increase in the female ratio occurs in the age groups older than 70, i.e. among those whose men were likely to have been involved in the Second War.

Both the Scandinavians and those from Southern Europe have higher numbers of men among the older generations. E.g. at 80 there are almost twice as many women as men in the Baltic and Balkans regions compared to NW Europe or Scandinavia.
