Eastern Europe has suffered several events which have caused temporary
increases in birth rates. They are most clearly marked for Russia and Ukraine
and were moderated for Moldova and Slovenia. Notable events seem to have
occurred in late 1920s, late 1930s and for prolongued periods around 1950-1960
and again from 1970 to 1990.
Moldova had the most
pronounced recent changes, twice reaching 'high' points around 1956 and
again 1986, while Slovenia appears to have reflected more stable conditions
since 1946. It underwent the same decrease in birth rates as applied to
Southern Europe, since 1980
