Knitting/Embroidery/Tapestry Groups: Your Internet app has just arrived. It was bound to happen sooner or later. Are we ready for it? Probably not; but the Internet CAN enrich what we do at home and in our 'active learning' groups, and we shouldn't assume that future changes have nothing to offer.

Have a look, for example, at the rich resources of the Antique Pattern Library of tapestry pages.

See what's happening now at the Dovecot Studios in Edinburgh, Scotland - internationally renowned as a producer of hand-woven tapestry and gun-tufted rugs.

The Royal School of Needlework (RSN) is the international centre of excellence for the art of hand embroidery. With a thriving education programme, the RSN offers a range of courses for beginners through to advanced. Steeped in history with unrivalled expertise in the techniques of hand embroidery, the Royal School of Needlework has taken this captivating, traditional art and made it relevant today.

Dobara Network:
A recent study has found that telltale signs, including a sudden decline in walking speed, is linked to an 86% chance of having a fall within the next three weeks. This means that robotic movement sensing systems in the homes of elderly people can predict with a high level of accuracy when a person is at high risk of having a fall and send warnings to support workers or relatives, say researchers. Elderly residents who were monitored by the system, which allowed clinicians to intervene before injuries occurred, were able to live independently for 1.8 years longer than those without the technology.

Marjorie Skubic, a professor of electrical and computer engineering who is pioneering the approach at a residence linked to the University of Missouri, said: “Our goal is to help people age in the home of their choice, which in many cases will be their existing home. People say ‘I want to stay in my own home’.” Click to learn more >>>
