PLOS is the Public Library of Science (see banner above). In less than a decade, PLOS has helped to liberate tens of thousands of research articles and to advance scientific discovery as a pioneer of Open Access (OA) publishing. Our journals have now established OA as an effective and sustainable way to share the latest and best research with everyone.

SIGNPOST doesn't normally support advertising, but this wonderful book "Growing up in London, 1930-1960" by U3A member Peter Cox, relating the lives of other U3A members must surely deserve to be an exception.

Peter says "I found the whole of the research completely engrossing. In the end I interviewed over 100 people from U3As all over London, and had vastly more material than I could use. I hope you find it absorbing, and that it may start to ring bells of things you'd forgotten. It certainly did for me, although I wasn't born until 1945, and nearly all of you were born between the two wars. I hope it does justice to your generation".

Taking care of grandchildren: Many parents turn to grand-parents for help with childcare, and in some cases it is the grandmother who brings up children. Grandparents Plus is the national charity (England and Wales) which champions the vital role of grandparents and the wider family in children’s lives – especially when they take on the caring role in difficult family circumstances. One in four working families depends on grandparents for childcare. This ranges from regular childcare for babies and toddlers to dropping off and picking up children from school, to helping out when the children are ill or during the school holidays. The Grandparents Association has a family childcare checklist which you might find a useful starting point.

U3A India: J. R. Gupta, President of U3A India and Chairperson, Confederation of Senior Citizens Associations of Delhi ( an umbrella body of 11 lakh senior citizens ) and Senior Citizens Council of Delhi was honoured with BEST SENIOR CITIZENS AWARD by Shri Arvind Kejriwal, Chief Minister of Delhi on the occasion of International Elders Day Function held on 1-10-2015 at Delhi Secretariat.

The award was given in recognition to his continuous selfless services for the cause and care of Elderly particularly protecting lonely senior citizens from abuses/humiliations from their own children and others even without the help from Delhi Police.

Our U3A correspondent writes "I know it's an uncomfortable topic for a lot of people. Actually it’s a very important issue for me and the more awareness I can get for this topic the more people can find help. I suffered quietly for years with this and was not aware information like this was available".

In the editor's opinion, anything that might help other elderly people is worth publishing. We hope all our readers will agree.

Archaeology Groups: Scans by Dr. Nicholas Reeves, author of "The Complete Tutankhamun" of what appears to be a false door found in Tutankhamun's Tomb are said to reveal two hidden entrances behind the painted plaster.

Dr Reeves says “Cautious evaluation of the ... scans ... has yielded results which are beyond intriguing: indications of two previously unknown doorways, one set within a larger partition wall and both seemingly untouched since antiquity."

The unusually small size and shape of Tutankhamun’s burial chamber has puzzled archaeologists since its discovery in 1922 by Howard Carter. Dr Reeves suggests that it was built as an extension to another tomb perhaps belonging to Queen Nefertiti.

If that is the case, then this would finally put paid to an earlier theory, that the mummy known as "the Younger Lady" found in tomb KV35 is that of Nefertiti.

IS RETIREMENT BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH?: A recent seminar on the hot topic of ‘Mindfulness for Healthy Ageing’ was attended by over 200 people during the Victorian Seniors Festival at the Peninsula Community Theatre, Mornington. Dr Craig Hassed, Senior Lecturer, Monash University, School of Primary Health Care, provided an inspiring and evidence-based presentation on the impact of Mindfulness practises on the promotion and maintenance of mental and physical health and wellbeing.

Dr Hassed reminded the audience that ‘….ideas about the relationship between the body and mind were not new.’ Using the painting, 'The Creation of Adam' by Michaelangelo, and a quote, ‘The body is a shadow of the soul’ (Marsilio Ficino, 1433-99), Craig captured early philosophical thinking on the topic. A copy of this presentation is available on the U3A Mornington website >>>.
