The University of the Third Age
in the United Kingdom

Peter Sinclair of UK's Internetwork Group maintains our WWW LINKS on his website at http://www.harrowu3a.co.uk and has monitored the growth of U3A web sites in the UK since October 1996. He says:---

"Here is the graph (click here or on the thumbnail for a larger view) which demonstrates unequivocally the rapid growth and acceptance of the Internet by U3A members in the UK.

"There are other statistics which can be extrapolated from the fact that there are now 230 such U3A websites in the UK. The total U3A membership in the UK is now around 166,000 in almost 600 local U3A groups.

"Just under 40% of all local U3A groups in the UK now have their own website. If we assume that only 10% of our total UK membership also have access to the Internet, we could have around 16,000 members up and down the country with whom email communication is not only
possible but desirable.

"The above calculation is fully supported by the 'Harrow U3A Members Only' Email register which lists more than 350 members, out of a total Harrow U3A membership of 1400. This equates to 25% of our membership, although it reaches more than half of all members within hours. We
provide regular news updates of events and breaking news, new course news including information on major local activities.

Clearly, the Internet has found ready and enthusiastic acceptance by large numbers of our U3A members."
