The inaugural meeting of this new U3A took place on Saturday October 27th at the Clam Event Center, Plot 1-6 Clam Avenue, Omole Ikeja, Lagos. It was a red-letter day for the initiators of the project. Fifty members from the First Baptist Church, Broad Street, Lagos were formally inducted. Elders from new chapters will be inaugurated as and when they are constituted. Dr David Oludare Mark is the Director of U3A Project Lagos Center. The encouragement and go ahead for spreading U3A in Nigeria came from Prof Francois Villas, President of International Association of Universities of the Third Age (IAUTA) when he visited Nigeria in February and was guest of honour at a conference organized by Dr Charles Afolabi. “His message made an indelible impression on us and we feel confident that the U3A Project Lagos Center will soar to great heights and meet his expectations,” said Dr David Mark. “Our aims and objectives in setting up Lagos Center are in line with the general U3A goals of promoting life long learning among our senior citizens and also to interact with others in this global network and promote our adaptability to the longevity revolution”, he said. The Center is eager to partner and collaborate with the U3A international community especially on exchange programmes and other activities that will enrich and foster sound relationships not only in Lagos but across the Sub-Saharan Africa region.
